The republicans are perhaps growing a small social conscience, but mostly its just for show. The major reason that they are breaking from trump is that he is 'tarnishing the brand'--he is putting into action what republicans have been working for since Nixon, and now out in the open, people can see what all the high sounding 'principles' they have been spouting for decades look like when put into effect. Specific to today, his base is praising him for his strong 'law and order' stance on the protesters. Where have we heard this before?
