25. Lee Whitnum vs. the Jews: Democratic Senate candidate blasts U.S. policy in the Middle East

As many members of Connecticut’s Jewish community see it, Lee Whitnum isn’t just anti-Israel, she’s antisemitic.
As Whitnum herself sees it, however, she’s simply “clear-headed and purposeful.”

Whitnum is one of six Democrats vying for the Senate seat to be vacated by Joe Lieberman at the end of the year.
An outspoken critic of AIPAC, the Greenwich resident has grabbed headlines with her unabashed proclamations against U.S. support of Israel and the policies of individual lawmakers. Many of her comments use blatantly anti-Jewish and anti-Israel rhetoric, though Whitnum and her supporters deny that she is antisemitic.

Whitnum has filed legal complaints against bloggers and politicians who claim that she is racist. A recent defamation lawsuit filed against Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy was thrown out last month in the Stamford Superior Court.

On Mar. 23, the Connecticut Democratic Party held its annual Jefferson Jackson Bailey Dinner at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford. Outside the event, Whitnum and a group of some 20 supporters distributed a manifesto-type document addressed to “Democratic leaders.” Whitnum later entered the Convention Center to hand out copies of the screed. The Ledger later learned that several attendees lodged complaints with the Connecticut regional office of the Anti-Defamation League.

The manifesto targets Senators Richard Blumenthal and Joe Lieberman, accusing them of inappropriate and conspiratorial ties to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his policies.

Anti-Defamation League: Whitnum used Anti-Semitic Language

We received a number of complaints about our interview with Democrat Lee Whitnum last week on Face the State. As a candidate for the U.S. Senate, we invited Whitnum on the program as we have every candidate competing for a party nomination.

Whitnum’s comments about Israel, on Face the State and in other venues, have led some to accuse her of being anti-semitic. In fact, Whitnum is currently suing Governor Dannel Malloy, alleging he called her an anti-semite. We asked the Anti-Defamation League of Connecticut to watch and analyze our interview, and here’s what the organization had to say:

In our opinion, Ms. Whitnum invoked anti-Semitic canards, including allegations of Jewish control and accusations of dual loyalty. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, ADL is strictly non-partisan, and does not endorse or oppose candidates for office.

You can watch the interview right here: http://dennishouse.wordpress.com/2012/02/24/whitnum-blasts-bysiewicz-and-murphy/

In addition to her lawsuit against Governor Malloy, Whitnum is also involved in other legal proceedings. Her case against the Norwich Bulletin is now in federal court to be heard today in New Haven. Whitnum is suing to be included in an upcoming Bulletin senate debate. Next week, Whitnum is due in court for a lawsuit she filed against the author of the My Left Nutmeg blog. She also filed lawsuits against Yahoo and the town of Greenwich.

Whitnum Blasts Bysiewicz, Murphy and Malloy

In her first television interview of the campaign, Lee Whitnum came out swinging against two of her fellow Democrats seeking the nomination for the seat currently held by Joe Lieberman. During a taping of Face the State, the lawyer and author from Greenwich was highly critical of Susan Bysiewicz and Chris Murphy.

On Bysiewicz, here is an excerpt of what Whitnum had to say: “I don’t like her at all. I think she is a card-carrying Israelist.” Is she running to make sure this Congress remains pro-Israel?”

As for Murphy:

“Chris Murphy pledged $30M to Israel over the next ten years……..We elected a young maverick kid and he just hasn’t done very much. He needs to be taken out of office.”

Whitnum hasn’t made many friends in the Connecticut Democratic Party. She is currently suing Governor Malloy, alleging he called her an anti-semite. In the interview, Whitnum said the governor (who has publicly talked about his dyslexia) can’t read. In the past she has called Senator Lieberman a traitor, and demanded Senator Richard Blumenthal resign.

She will get some supporters.
