32. Eh, most discussions on the Internet wind up being chest-beating displays,

where people just try to confirm their bona fides with the dominant stream of thought. Not a lot of people check out reliable, independent sources of information. Mostly they just read people who confirm their POV.
The thing I find most annoying is what is termed "appeal to authority": where someone recognizable who stands for a certain expertise is trotted out as saying they agree with the poster, even though that person's expertise isn't in the area being talked about, OR is from some other situation not quite comparable to the one being discussed.
This is different from citing Amnesty International in a discussion on human rights; it's more like trotting out an opinion from, say, Colonel Wilkerson, Powell's former chief of staff, that the chemical attack might have been a false flag operation. Yes, he's a military man, and yes, he does have the experience to speak about stuff like this, but that doesn't mean he has special knowledge of this situation or special knowledge re what actually happened in Syria. It's a reasonably informed opinion, but it's still just one man's opinion.
To make it crystal clear, this guy's expertise is munitions, and when things stray from that into, say, actual chemicals used in these weapons, he doesn't give his opinion, even though it would probably be pretty good, because that would be a sort of appeal to authority; he goes and asks actual chemical weapons experts what they think. That shows straightforward honesty you don't often find on the Internet.

And yes, in the end, it should be about saving lives. I don't understand the instantaneous bashing that takes place around here as soon as any Democrat strays from the Righteous & Proper Course As Certified & Approved on Democratic Underground. It's childish and it's ridiculous.
