Used to be that the old-money types (think Romney) really ran the party; they didn't give a flying fig about abortion and gay marriage but used those issues to get the Fundie crowd to vote against their own interests. Now I think the Fundies outnumber the $$ types and are determined to get their way while they can. Also they know they've lost the fight about gay rights so they will double down on their last remaining target, women.
