Democrats don't rely on the same coalition that he had in the 90s with Bill Clinton: rural voters. They have won the last two elections consolidating the urban and suburban vote, and these are also places where the message of gun control is the most receptive.

It's a myth that supporting gun control now is political suicide. Perhaps in the 90s, but not so much now.
