(3,596 posts)overpopulating the planet with too many people, having children that you cannot support emotionally, financially or practically is immoral.
We are at a point on this planet where we need to do everything we can to slow or stop population growth. There is not enough food, enough potable water, enough housing, jobs, health care, etc. for the billions we have now.
I consider the Catholic and Mormon churches with their "have as many as possible" cultures as two of the most immoral forces in our culture. I realize that most American Catholics use birth control as undoubtedly do many Mormons. But the public position of those churches is that sex is great, encouraged if not mandated as long as it is heterosexual, the man is on top and the sole purpose is to make more babies.
Most sane American Protestant churches such as mine take a different approach. We celebrate new life as a gift from God but we strongly encourage families to engage in soulful planning. We offer courses in financial planning, family planning (things couples need to think about and plan as they consider establishing a family) and then try to work with families to create environments that are loving and caring. We don't care if a family has one or six children but we consider the birth of each child as something that needs to be carefully planned so that the child, and the family, are positioned for love and, ultimately, success.
