8. I fear it may not be that simple?

As long as there are large enough pockets of unvaccinated, uninfected people that the virus can exploit, there will be continued evolution of the virus to create worse and worse strains. More new cases = more mutations = greater chance of a mutation favorable to the virus and unfavorable to us.

But, at some point the virus does effectively run out of large populations to exploit. At that point continued spread of the virus begins to depend on being as non-harmful as possible. That's when it becomes like the flu or common cold, as I understand it.
