Not a distraction-- an issue taken on by the image of the issue itself-- American style branding at its best. Certainly doesn't minimize or diminish credibility-- by the very act itself, it add credibility via brilliant marketing.

Although I realize you've already convinced yourself no one will take its seriously, and although you've already convinced yourself that people will do A and B at the expense of C (with zero supporting evidence) I imagine there will be a rather large contingent of people who do.
