two adults and four kids lived there. Or no one lived there. How accurate would that be?

Knocking on doors was the best method we had in the 1700s. Not now. I have been a census worker and there are many dwellings that never can be accessed. Gates, hostile signage, vicious animals, etc. The census trains workers to take any unnecessary risks, and for good reason.

My wife has studied genealogy for decades. One thing she has learned is that old census workers are mostly accurate, but far from 100%.
