9. This was an "annual block party"

At least 21 people shot, one fatally, at a party in Southeast Washington

Residents of the Greenway neighborhood said that the annual block party draws people from across the District to the residential streets off Minnesota Avenue SE, south of East Capitol Street. A flier advertised the fifth annual “34th-n-EAT” cookout beginning Saturday night, and indicated free food and drinks, with relatives of the teenage victim saying it drew an even larger crowd than in prior years.

The flier promised a “drama free event.”

First thing I figured when I saw the headline was "annual outdoor event" (whether a "block party" or "picnic" or equivalent). It's been sortof a long time black cultural thing to have these types of events in late summer. For example we used have what was called the "Black Family Reunion" where people would gather to bbq in Fairmount Park and there would be activities and whatnot set up along with and there were headliners and I think that eventually evolved into "The Roots Picnic" (hosted by that musical group with other performers).

In no uncertain terms, Philly's Mayor and Health Director cancelled every single "annual" event here in the city - including those held outside, through to the end of February. No exceptions. And that included the 3-day "Made in America" festival, the oldest Thanksgiving Parade in the nation, and the Mummer's Parade on New Years.

We are determined NOT to repeat 1918 here. As it is, we still end up with neighborhood blocks doing their annual block parties, some of which get out of hand.
