In reply to the discussion: Romney Falsely Claims Colorado Gunman Obtained Weapons Illegally [View all]Igel
(35,300 posts)Are we saying that the "weapons and bombs and other devices" were all legal? ThinkProgress is.
I know the firearms were. Were the bombs?
And were there even other devices?
Because if the bombs were illegal, Romney wasn't wrong. If they were legal, then I think we found a point of agreement between (R) in the House and President Obama. I doubt anybody wants to allow people to wire their apts. with bombs.
What's wrong is TP's paraphrase of "Well this person shouldnt have had any kind of weapons and bombs and other devices and it was illegal for him to have many of those things already". TP decided that they could repace "weapons and bombs and other devices" with just "weapons"--that's called "misquoting" and then say that Romney said of the firearms that "those were" legally purchased--another misquote.. Again, drop out "things" and it reads well; leave in "those things" and there's a little doubt in my cohesion sensor. I wouldn't have referred back to just "fireamrs" as just "those" in that sentence.
However, the two misquotes together read really, really well. They just don't say the right thing.
