In reply to the discussion: Brazil court tells US swimmers Lochte, Feigen to stay put [View all]milestogo
(16,829 posts)32. Brings back memories of a trip I took to Brazil.
A member of our group could not find a document issued to him upon entering the country when we were about to board the return flight. He had his passport and we were only in the country for 10 days. Our guide, who was fluent in Portuguese and made the trip frequently, could vouch for him. For a while we didn't think he was going to be allowed to get on the flight.
The authorities held up our international flight for 90 minutes in the middle of the night, and made him sign a 20 page document (in Portuguese) saying, among other things, that he would have to pay a fine if he ever returned to the country.
I don't think any of us wanted to return to Brazil after that.

My gut feeling is local police are trying to save face or cover something up

I totally agree with you. This seems like an attempt to save face by police in Rio
