A mission that's not intrinsically religious anyway, but simply humane. This is the (male) leadership of a cult in retreat from modernity trying to win a battle with their own parishioners that they lost two generations ago.
I remember some quote from the Catholic operating manual about "rendering unto Caesar . . ." that seems painfully obvious here. To the degree that their institutions intersect with the secular world, the Catholic leadership is going to have to suck it up, just like their founder instructed them 2,000 years ago.
It's like abortion: if you object to abortion, don't have one; if you think contraception is a sin, don't use it.
