(108,915 posts)9. It hasn't been such a large part of the diet. For example, in Ireland
the peasants couldn't afford wheat (which the absentee landlords were shipping off to the Continent, along with butter, milk, etc., during the "famine." The mainstay of their diet was potatoes.
Now it's hard to avoid wheat, since it's in most processed foods, as well as in foods you wouldn't expect -- like soy sauce and "rice noodles" (which can contain more wheat than rice.)

I knew a guy whose family raised wheat. He told me that the wheat we eat is not the wheat we ate.
