'Satanic'. But it's been quite awhile since I was in contact with Evangelical theology on anything more than a passing basis. Evangelicals' hatred of Roman Catholicism dates back to and derives from the Reformation, Counter-Reformation (Inquisition) and 30 Years' War, IIRC, so some of this stuff has its origins in the somewhat distant past.

I agree that it is a sad way to live.
