How does commenting on this benefit me, Donald Trump?

Obviously any comment I make has to condemn the attack. But if I make it too soon or make it too strong, I will upset my base of not-bright supporters. So I will wait.

Once there has been enough comment on my no comment, the right wing echo chamber can establish the narrative of howling liberal bullies. Then, I will issue a statement condemning violence against all people, slanting it so my base can read between the lines to see my scorn for liberals and Muslims.

Perfect.
