In reply to the discussion: Bernie demands that Democrats accept 100% of his platform? WTF? [View all]JudyM
(29,105 posts)stop or it risks alienating them, however. They are not about Bernie, per se (as much as some on DU falsely mock him for), they are passionate about the values he espouses and his courage in speaking truth to power, as clichéd as that expression can sound. I have been very deep in this part of the party, I'll acknowledge, having worked with his supporters all over the country. A few voted for tRump on the misguided belief that his Bernie-lite populism was genuine, but that was very, very few.
Based on their engaging him at a higher level, our party leadership obviously sees that we need to expand our platform and, hopefully, change our alliances/dependencies, in order to better align with what this large voting bloc finds most important. And the vast majority of that voting bloc (as heterogeneous as it is, not a uniform bloc) will vote Dem without a doubt if we shift in that direction.
The values-shift wouldn't be anti-Dem, in fact it'd go back to more traditional Dem values. At the heart of it, though, is a view that, to correspond with doing what is in the best interest of people and planet, the party needs to focus far less energy and revenue on what the big dollar donors/industries want, and far more on real social and eco improvement. If that change is made, the crowds will follow, because no way in hell will the rethugs meet us there.
