employees are costs which MUST be minimized. The paying customer must be sacrificed to save on employee costs. Employee costs show up on the balance sheet. A customer who never flies United again will not show up on the balance sheet - especially since they select those who fly the least.
As I understand it, the fact that they are compensating bumped people is a result of regulation but I am not aware of regulations that say they cannot be bumped. This event shows there should be - inhumane treatment of a paying customer should have been the last thing that should happen.
Just goes to show - capitalism is for the big guys.
