Half of the retellings present it as a case of Canute teaching a lesson to his courtiers; the other half present it as a tale of the king's own arrogance and his comeuppance for thinking he could control nature. Might I suggest which of the versions was chosen reflected more on the teller's concern for trying to portray kingship as a positive (for his or her own protection)?
