1. This piling on of charges is a very common occurrence.

"she faces a slew of legal charges, including assault, trespassing, failure to comply with a peace officer, failure to turn down amplified sound, making criminal threats and, most shockingly, making terrorist threats. The charges stem from a bold action she participated in on March 21 to mark the third anniversary of the fatal shooting by Pasadena police of 19-year-old Kendrec McDade. Richards and others blocked streets in Pasadena’s Old Town, bringing traffic to a standstill to make a statement about police brutality."

This for what basically sounds like an unauthorized street demo.

Similarly, the LA homeless woman who picked up a cop's baton while the cop and his buddies were busy killing a homeless guy is now being charged with "assault," and faces 25 to life as a third-striker. For picking up a baton.

Similarly, Sandra Bland gets hit with an assault charge for not being sufficiently deferential.

And it is very common in criminal cases. Pile on the charges, then people basically have to cop a plea or face decades in prison (as opposed to just years when they plea bargain).
