(10,942 posts)Romney lied about what he really stood for. He claimed to be pro gar rights, pro women's rights and pro other liberal causes. The person that ran against him ran an uninspired campaign, similar to the recent campaign of Marth Coakley that resulted in Scott Brown elected. To understand how Romney could get elected in the Bay State, you must understand the Bay State itself. Western Massachusetts is conservative, as is southeastern Massachusetts. The powerbase that elects democratic Senators and the Governor lies in eastern counties like Suffork and central Massachusetts counties like Worcester County and the large and powerful Middlesex County. Middlesex County in particular is critically important because it is massive in population, well educated and leans moderate. If a candidate like Scott Brown or Romney can minimize their deficit in Middlesex County, that candidate wins because counties like Suffork can't overcome the vote from conservative parts of the Bay State. House democrats in the western and southeastern part of the Bay State do well because districting is done in a sane way that cuts in both cities and rural towns, that districting neutralized the angry votes that is typically found in rural towns. To go back to Middlesex County, that county is the statewide vote kingmaker, it's vote in raw numbers overwhelms votes from all other counties. BTW, Elizabeth Warren is doing well because she polls well against Scott Brown in Middlesex County.
