They're "rimfire" rounds, meaning they're set off by crushing the thin rim of the casing. According to this guy, he dropped a barbell on it and set it off. Not completely implausible, but it's highly unlikely that it would have had enough power to fly out and wound him. Individual rounds aren't very powerful outside of the pressure chamber of an actual gun.
