If it has a density far greater than ice it would make sense it survived.

And what size is it? Read somewhere it was nearly as ~~large as earth~~? Ok, saw it is has gone from just 5km to 2 km. Guess what I remembered is the coma was very large. From coma comes comet. Or is it from comet comes coma? But that sure is one big coma.

One track I saw was that earth would converge with Ison coming closer, just more than a few LD's (LD being the distance from moon to earth, iirc.)

We do live in interesting times. I don't believe we have had such a close encounter in our near history.

Too bad we don't have some astronomers on this site?!?!?
