If it has a density far greater than ice it would make sense it survived.

And what size is it? Read somewhere it was nearly as large as earth? Ok, saw it is has gone from just 5km to 2 km. Guess what I remembered is the coma was very large. From coma comes comet. Or is it from comet comes coma? But that sure is one big coma.

One track I saw was that earth would converge with Ison coming closer, just more than a few LD's (LD being the distance from moon to earth, iirc.)

We do live in interesting times. I don't believe we have had such a close encounter in our near history.

Too bad we don't have some astronomers on this site?!?!?
