had food stamps existed back in the early 60's we would have qualified without a doubt. There were five kids at home, and mom was a nurse. Nurses did not make much money back then. Dad was not in the picture.

What helped a lot, as terrible as it was for a few years, was that we always knew things would get better for us. And they did.

When I was a sophomore in high school I had a Saturday baby-sitting gig that paid three dollars for eight hours. I used the money to buy groceries for the family.
