weren't going too well for the Jews even before the crucifixion. The Northern tribes utterly wiped out by the Assyrians. The Southern tribes taken into captivity by the Babylonians and their temple and Jerusalem destroyed. A plaything for the the Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, and Romans. A few bright moments along the way (Cyrus letting them return to Jerusalem, the Maccabee revolt, and Herod the Great (of course that sucked being a regular Jew paying taxes to build that huge temple).
