Seriously, it's fake. These stories were nonsense, cooked up in large part by sources like The Watchtower, chick Tracts, and other "Jesus people" sources of the time (not the malls, as I joked.) You know, the same sources that told you that trick-or-treating was a worship of the "pagan satan", Sam Hain? Alternately it could just be an attempt to make halloween "Scarier" by some people who are bad at thinking.

Whatever the source, it's certainly helped contribute to the institutional paranoia that defines American culture these days
