Quite a while ago there was an article in the Star Tribune about collection agencies bothering next of kin for bills (not just medical) that they were not legally responsible for. (Apparently it's especially easy to con elderly parents into thinking they owe for their adult children). Minnesota has some strict rules for collection agencies and an AG that enforces them - it was not pretty for the companies involved.
