...or just "Clinton was a polarizing figure" to include Hillary.

They and Obama were "polarizing" because the Republicans actively chose to attack them early and often. They constructed false caricatures: for Clinton they painted him as dope-smokin' draft-dogin' Hippie Bill and pointed RWers Hippie Hate at him; for Hillary, likewise about the Right's caricature of Feminists; For Obama they did part that, part 60s black nationalist, and part that olde tyme racism.

They aren't polarizing because of anything they're actually doing, they're "polarizing" because the Right fires up their base by framing everything as a crusade against evil-on-a-stick.
