In reply to the discussion: Helen Thomas has died at the age of 92. [View all]DFW
(54,356 posts)97. There are documentaries about Helen out there
One of them was called "Thank you, Mr. President." It's how reporters now bid farewell to the president of the US after he answers the final question of a press conference. It wasn't done until the tradition was started by the one journalist in the room who gave the president (no matter which one) probably the meanest grilling of the whole session: Helen Thomas.
Thanks to those who mentioned me on here and remembered that Helen was a friend of mine and my family.
I have posted a memorial thread of my own elsewhere on GD, if anyone's interested.

One of the very best and one of the last real journalists in DC. She will be missed. RIP, Helen.

Oh, Helen... I so had hoped she'd somehow live long enough to see her reputation restored...

And didn't they give her chair (front row, center) in the WH press room to some stooge from FOX?

She inspired us all, and proved a woman could shine among all that testosterone.

Without her, the presidential press conferences have become just another photo op.

A distinguished journalistic career. Too bad about the nasty anti-semitism, however (nt)

I've been reading about her today. What a courageous speaker of truth to power.
