What the US did to him the other day is a staggering breach of international policy and perhaps international law. The White House wouldn't do that unless they were very, very serious about getting Snowden - and I don't think they'll lay back now.
Getting Snowden out will be non-trivial, unless they can convince a Russian or Chinese commercial airliner to take him, direct flight that gets to international airspace ASAP. That's the only scenario I see where the US won't do something reckless again.
