I think that if they didn't they'd forgot who they were.
I also feel that it smacks of unhealthy jingoism and feeds into the "American Exceptionalism" nonsense.
One is an American by an act of cosmic chance only.
And as far as scenery is concerned, it's all over the world. Just as beautiful and more protected.
