We feel like a fight, so we look for trouble to get into a fight over.
I remember being unnaccountably angry quite a bit when I was younger, and spent a lot of time looking for why. Mostly I was embarrassed or ashamed of it, because the world has always been full of people who have every reason to be angry at their lot in life, but who still manage to put on a smile and try to make their world a better place. On the other hand, I had advantages and opportunities in abundance (lower middle class california suburban, good family), yet just felt full of anger and hatred.
Asking "why", particularly of a kid who doesn't know, is just asking for some narrative to be invented, which is completely beside the point. Hormones fluctuate quite a bit in adolescence, and hormones create moods out of nothing in the same way drugs can create mental states out of nothing.
