... view Americans as total idiots? These stories get reported in UK papers.

A couple of salient remarks in the comments on the article:

I have never read such nonsense. Lots of dogs do that. They are just being dominant. Nothing else. How can you be that stupid to want to put the dog down for that. I hope he gets a home and is not put down. I despair of the human race.
