Indeed, the SCOTUS has taken great interest in Second Amendment cases... I'm sure there will be more clarification in the coming years ahead, especially as some of these more restrictive state-level bans wind their way through the courts.
But really, all rifles are "assault weapons" if used in the wrong hands. Even bolt-action single-shot hunting rifles can just as easily be fashioned into de facto sniper rifles.
I just think its kind of silly to pretend that any gun design didn't originate with military-use in mind.
