(14,177 posts)Instead of what we have now a lot of people with gun fetishes that are not responsible with their guns. That doesn't mean that there aren't responsible gun owners, but it is horrifying what happens when they aren't. For example, one of my daughters' roommates son got his father's gun and committed suicide with it. This was before Sandy Hook. The incident devastated my children as they knew this man fairly well as he visited his dad often and stayed with them for a couple of weeks at a time. He was a sensitive person with a lot of issues and became depressed when he lost his job and the mother of his child refused visitation.
I can't say how many children I have read about that have gotten a hold of a gun and accidentally have killed themselves or gotten severe injuries, but enough to know that too many people don't take strong enough measures to ensure their guns won't kill anyone by accident or on purpose if stolen.
There are a lot of issues involved here. Targeting people with mental health issues isn't the answer, banning violent video games and movies isn't the answer, and banning some kinds of guns isn't the answer either. We need to take a serious look at how other democracies are handling this and adopt as many of their policies as we can when we find those that work.
