they are not the best self defense weapons - a handgun is better. But they are excellent target and hunting rifles.
LaPierre is an idiot. Why not talk to actual gun owners instead of him?

I work in schools. If we put weapons in the classrooms, I will stop doing so. So will many others.

I work in very bad areas. I have had guns pointed at me on three occasions in the past 10 years.
