In reply to the discussion: New 50-state handgun policy: mandatory Open Carry [View all]ancianita
(35,925 posts)136. Fair enough. I've seen video games relax and decompress kids with violent, angry lives. Two of
them in my life come from the poorest areas of Chicago. They were dirt poor. Traveled through violent neighborhoods. Now they live in Redmond, WA. One is a game beta tester and the other is a project coordinator with Microsoft. The latter visits me every time he's in town. We've taken a road trip together. Their families are still poor. But they've moved on.
My own son's love of gaming led him to computer study, nanotech and biotech study in Australia, business study in Chicago and now community organizing in New Mexico. The average age of gamers in the US is 35.
I just don't buy the video game connection. I think Ars Technica has data on this, as probably does Slashdot.

Totally with you. But those towns are supplied with guns mostly from us. Our weapons industry.

A nit-pick. Concealed carry is compatible with "guns make society more polite"

I don't endorse it. My gun owning friends have said it, so I use their rationalizations here...

There you go. Good argument against mandatory open carry. Which seems macho and stupid.

If we want our 2nd Amendment, we gotta act like grownups about carrying guns.

Yep. You're right. "Cool" doesn't scare anyone or promise to be one click away from civil war.

I don't see a need where private citizens need to carry guns in public, period. Open or concealed.

Who the hell is saying that everyone has to carry a handgun? No. One. Here. Ever.

Not at all. I've not said that gun ownership is to be avoided. I see the need for gun ownership.
