(20,441 posts)The aim of the people behind the plot to overthrow Franklin Roosevelt was to install a pro-fascist government that melded government power and private/corporate power.
The people behind the plot favored similar solutions to the Great Depression that Hitler was implementing in Germany to get people back to work. He was re-arming Germany and ramping up production to produce the machines of war.
In order to get support of the major captains of industry, war contracts were doled out and deals were cut between the Third Reich and major corporations that controlled mining, milling, and production centers. By marshaling the great industrial capacity of Germany was Hitler then in a position to build a war machine rivaling any other in the world at the time. He simply lacked the manpower of Russia or the United States and their bigger capacity for industrial production to wage a protracted conflict.
If, on the other hand, the United States was run by a government that was friendly to Hitler and fellow fascists across Europe, the manpower issue would be eliminated. There would be more than enough men to overpower both the Soviet Union and the British Empire on the battlefield and eliminate the threat of democracy by ordinary people.
