65. I think another reason for the low prosecution rate....

... is that the detectives often try to talk the victims out of pressing charges. I know about this, as it happened to me. The detective did his best to get me to not press charges. Said the defense lawyer would rake me thru the mud on the stand, etc., etc., etc. Make my life miserable. I was a grown married woman at that time, and I knew the defense lawyer would do no such thing, because I was clean as the riven snow. And that is exactly what happened. They wanted a plea bargain, and I said no, that I wanted it to go to trial. I was unafraid of the judicial system or the defense lawyer. The detective and I had done everything right. The evidence was iron clad. The asshole rapist was pleading "consensual", which was a bold-faced lie. I had never been with ANYONE beside my husband, thank you, and I don't lie. Ever. But the rapist kept saying consensual. Right up to the day that a trial date was to be set, he claimed innocent. And finally, on that day, he admitted to everything. The detective and DA said he wouldn't get anymore time if I went on with the trial, so I gave in when they said he was going to serve 8-10 in maximum, no parole. So, it did not go to trial, but justice was done nonetheless.

You have no idea how it felt when the detective tried to talk me out of going to trial. It was like being raped all over again. Most women cave in to the pressure, I think. Some of them are pressured by their hubbies/families to not do it, as it will (somehow) bring disgrace on the THEM if it goes to trial. That would be like being raped again too. But thank God that isn't how it was for me. It's a violent assault. Rape is rape is rape. No matter if it's a child, male or female or grown adult.

I came through it all in flying colors. I had a minimum of counseling and I've never looked back. The TRUTH really can set one free. I so hope that justice can be done for the young boy in this instance and that he will be provided the intensive counseling he's going to need for many years to come. The sad thing is that even if justice is done, the victim sometimes never recovers. That horrible moment in time haunts them for the rest of their days.

Please, everybody...continue on with the conversation. Do NOT stop and give me a second thought. I made it. This young boy needs all of our thoughts and prayers.

I think this stuff too often doesn't make the news in either case gollygee Jan 2013 #1
