General Discussion
In reply to the discussion: There is a large mostly abandoned shopping center near where I live. [View all]I am just old enough to remember the downtown of the county seat where I was born was bustling with several square blocks of a wide range of local, independent stores. Still have fond memories of being very little when we would go down there during the holidays.
They put in a reasonably large indoor mall on one side of town, and for a brief period both downtown and the mall were doing well. But, more national retail type stand alones came in, downtown started to fade. Then, they put in an even bigger and more modern indoor mall on the other side of town, which killed downtown AND the indoor mall on the other side of town as the national stand alone retail stores grew. And, of course now, online retail.
I'm not one of those bemoaning and saying we should go back to the old days. It just adds perspective to how things evolve.
