If I knew them better and had actually read them, I'd suggest a reading of The Federalist Papers on factions or mobs, as they called parties in the day, to glean some deeper insight. The system was set up for and by selfless patriots who thought of nothing but the long term viability of the Republic. We're a long way from Peoria now.
