(22,152 posts)3. Once when I was studying for my Masters in
Special Education, I visited a public school run by the county for severely "handicapped" as they were called then. Until that point, I had only taught in regular education classrooms, or occasionally in RSP classes for children with mild learning disabilities, so I was completely unprepared for what I saw. I literally burst into tears within minutes. The staff tried to comfort me, and I felt foolish and like I was in the way. It was a real eye opener. You describe it well.
