You need one service, one backup, onion field insurance and a shotgun. Some departments, urban in particular, also authorize AR-15 type weapons due to the North Hollywood shooting.
If you are not a cop, and you like target shooting...I think you can reasonably have two guns. Competitive shooters have a few more, that is due to the circuit. That means three to four, all different calibers.
A hunter, depends on game...small varmint, you don't need anything beyond a .22. Larger, my opinion the 223 is lousy for deer.
But that is as a reasonable answer as I can come up with.
Home defense, a Remington shotgun, that's it.
