rednecks and gun nuts? I can promise you they didn't. All that law did was assure that people like you aren't able to get them. The people who don't want them anyway.
And yes, I'd say it's pretty safe to safe to compare a ban on guns to the ban on drugs. We've seen the US government arming the Mexican cartels with the fast and furious. Those cartels murdered innocent people who had no way to protect themselves because it was illegal for them to have a gun. There's no denying this and this was done by the US government.
