My grandmother fled the poverty (and the Church) in Ireland to England. She married a Brit soldier and had 6 kids (one of them my mother). He was killed in an accident and she had to adopt her two sons and head for the USA in the 20s. My mother and one of her sisters married American men to become citizens. The other two didn't and may have never become citizens.
