11. My son--who has a vision impairment--was just fired from a wait staff job
Sat Dec 8, 2012, 07:37 AM
Dec 2012

at a new restaurant that just opened in town. He took the job--after turning down
a full-time job that would have started two weeks sooner--and was fired after one
week. The owner told him 'he'd had some bad reviews'. He also had some
terrific reviews from customers and he was never 'stiffed' on a tip.

I've advised my son he should contact the EEOC to look into filing a complaint
against the restaurant for violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

My son, btw, graduated with highest honors--with a double major (German and Comparative
Literature) and Phi Beta Kappa from UNC last May. He's taking a year off
while he decides on the focus for graduate studies. He's applied for a Fulbright
Scholarship to do original research in Berlin next year.

He's perfectly capable of handling a waiter's position--but he needs some extra
help and time in learning where things are and identifying things by shape.
He is legally blind and sees with his peripheral vision--which means he'll never
drive--but just because it takes him a little longer to learn his physical environment
doesn't mean he can't handle waiting on a table of customers and giving them
a pleasant dining experience.
