They were looking for a cabin down around Homer, which is where my brother lives. In fact, I'm familiar with that octagon house. My brother and his family did live way out on East End Road in a small cabin with little plumbing -- I think they had running water in the sink but no shower or toilet. They hauled drinking water and showered at the athletic club in town. They were out there for several years but have since moved closer in to town with all the amenities.
There really are a lot of people in the state who live in more primitive surroundings than I do, but I agree that the reality shows paint a skewed picture of life in this beautiful place.

So much of Alaska is uninhabited, we really don't even hear about a lot of these.
