Schumer, Jeffries, Pelosi mum on endorsing Harris [View all]

Capitol Hill's top Democrats didn't immediately throw their support behind Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday after President Biden withdrew from the 2024 race.

Why it matters: The party will have to move quickly to get behind a new candidate, and senior Democrats will be highly influential in that process.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) refrained from mentioning Harris in their initial statements Sunday even as Biden immediately threw his support behind her.

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), still one of the party's most influential figures, also didn't mention Harris.
