Served as VP under Van Buren. And also the only VP candidate who couldn't score the minimum electoral votes needed, and was elected by the Senate. The reason? Virginia's electors wouldn't vote for him. Why? Must have been his wife (common law), who just happened to be a mixed-race former slave. This was such a dealbreaker for the slave states that Van Buren ran for reelection in 1840 without a running mate on the ticket.
