I think the president might be trying to appear more open to entitlement reform than he really is so that he can blame the Republicans if they fail to make a deal by the end of the year. If he comes out now and says "no entitlement reform" he looks unreasonable. Like you said, if he actually looked like he was about to cave I think labor (and the AARP) would be out sounding the alarm.
